Otelco Mid-Missouri Telephone Company History
On December 21, 2004, Mid-Missouri Telephone Company became a division of Otelco, Inc., with our name officially changing to Otelco Mid-Missouri LLC on January 1, 2012. Otelco, Inc. owns and manages rural telephone companies in Alabama, Maine and Missouri with history that may be traced back as early as the 1900´s.
Each of these companies provides an array of services in addition to traditional local telephone, such as dial-up and broadband Internet access, cable and advanced television.
The original part of Mid-Missouri Telephone Company was formed May 18, 1903, and was known as the Gilliam Telephone Company. The other part of Mid-Missouri Telephone Company, known as Marshall Junction Telephone Company, was formed May 1928. With Harold A. Jones as the Marshall Junction Telephone Company Supervisor, metallic lines were built to service businesses around Marshall. In November 1932, with efforts to simplify bookkeeping, Gilliam Telephone Co. and Marshall Junction Telephone Co. merged and became what is known today as Mid-Missouri Telephone Company. In 1932, Mid-Missouri Telephone Co. acquired the Thomas J. Davis Telephone lines that serviced the areas southwest and northwest of Arrow Rock. In 1946, Mid-Missouri Telephone Company bought Blackwater-Arrow Rock Telephone Co. adding the Blackwater and remaining Arrow Rock exchanges. A dial conversion program began in February 1958 for the four original exchanges, Gilliam, Marshall Junction, Blackwater and Arrow Rock.
As President of Mid-Missouri Telephone Co., Harold A. Jones was especially interested in rural communities where telephone service needed upgrading. With this vision, Mid-Missouri Telephone Co. grew, acquiring Nelson, Pilot Grove, and Bunceton exchanges from United Telephone Co. Finally, adding Fortuna, Speed, Latham, High Point, and Miami completed the current twelve-exchange company extending 100 miles from north to south. It was not long until all these exchanges had modern dial service and the upgrade to direct dialing emerged.
In March 1995, Mid-Missouri Telephone became an Internet Service Provider as Mid-Missouri Internet Services was introduced to Mid-Missouri. With digital capability and enhanced calling features like Caller ID, Call Waiting, Three-Way Calling, DSL High Speed Internet, ISDN Digital Service, Voice Mail, and Gold * 1® Nationwide available to even the most rural customer, Mid-Missouri Telephone continues to provide customers with advanced telecommunication services at an affordable rate.
In 1999, the Jones family retired, and a new board of directors under Mid-Missouri Holding Company emerged and Denise Day and Gary Romig succeeded as Co-CEOs. Along with a new millennium and a new management structure, a new logo also emerged.
In 2002 I-Land Internet Services was acquired and consolidated with Mid-Missouri Internet Services creating the largest Internet Service provider in Central Missouri with local access lines in more than 35 exchanges. With the addition of new products and services including the expansion of DSL service areas, I-Land Internet Services continues to expand new technologies and services into new markets.
